10 things to know about Marc-André ter Stegen

He played 34 games in the last Bundesliga season and kept nine clean sheets

Marc-André ter Stegen made his Bundesliga debut on April 10, 2011 in a game away to 1. FC Köln. Mönchengladbach won 5-1.

The keeper only let in three goals in his first six games in the German top flight.

In his seventh and eighth games for the first team, he had to deal with major responsibilities. Mönchengladbach were fighting for Bundesliga survival. A 2-1 aggregate win over Bochum kept them up.

In the 2011/12 season he became the first choice goalkeeper, and was soon being recognised as the best stopper in the Bundesliga.

On January 6, 2014, Max Eberl, director of sport at Borussia Mönchengladbach, announced that ter Stegen would not be seeing out his contract, which was set to end on June 30, 2015.

He played 34 games in the last Bundesliga, keeping nine clean sheets.

At Mönchengladbach he has played alongside several players that have gone on to become big names at other clubs, including Brazil’s Dante (Bayern) and Germany’s Reus (Dortmund). He also played with Álvaro Domínguez and Juan Arango, formerly of Atlético Madrid and Mallorca, respectively.

He has played in goal for the German national team four times, including a game against Poland a few days ago. However, he won’t be going to the 2014 World Cup.

His surname, ter Stegen, is not a common one in Germany, and owes its origin to his Dutch ancestry.

Ter Stegen became the 54th different goalkeeper in the club’s history to compete in a Liga game :-D

Neuer (Bayern): "Ter Stegen is an excellent goalkeeper. He can read a game well. He's still young, he'll keep on getting better."
