How to win while losing

Real Madrid doesn’t lose even when they’re supposed to lose. Los Blancos ultimately failed at executing their more reactive and conservative game plan, lost both the battles in midfield and in the boxes, and produced significantly fewer chances than their opponent. However, unlike an ineffective Bayern, Real ruthlessly punished every Bayern mistake and scored the few chances they had. And they achieved this despite the gloomiest Ronaldo performance up to this point in UCL knockout stages, mostly a result of his positioning as a lone striker.

While Real Madrid had faced tactical disadvantages against Juventus, they still managed to execute their game plan and outplay the Bianconeri in midfield and in the boxes throughout considerable phases of the tie. Against Bayern, Los Blancos were notoriously outplayed on all fronts, to the point Bayern ended the match with 2.5 expected goals (xG) vs Real’s 0.75 xG, the highest xG difference of a team to lose a match in this year’s Champions League.

On to the lineups. Bayern started with a very offensive 4-1-4-1 that featured Robben and Ribery on the wings, James and Müller as attacking midfielders and Javi Martínez in the back. Thanks to the early Robben injury, the team played most of the match with Thiago and James in the middle and Müller - Ribery as an asymmetric winger pair, with Ribery producing on the right wing and Müller drifting from the left towards the box.

Real Madrid started with their 4–1–4–1 / 4–3–3 with the usual CKM midfield, Isco and Lucas Vásquez on the wings and Ronaldo as a lone striker. Learning from the defeat against Juventus, Zidane understood that the midfield diamond was a no-go against an opponent like Bayern, who are strong on the wings.

The first half hour saw Real Madrid slowly take control of the match until Bayern’s goal.

Zidane’s initial game plan focused on reinforcing defense on the wings and midfield control, with an aggressive high press that could allow Real to recover the ball early, create possession higher up the pitch and stifle any Bayern attempt at building up through the middle. However, the lack of compactness in the press and Bayern’s strength on the wings meant that Real Madrid could rarely recover the ball where they wanted too.

Real’s game on the ball didn’t help at first: fixed to the left wing and without positional freedom, Isco had greater difficulty in becoming a passing outlet for his team to beat Bayern’s pressing lines. As the match moved on, Isco started drifting away from this position on the left and helped Modric and Kroos string possessions in Bayern’s half.

But it’s almost impossible to tame a beast like Bayern at the Allianz: just as it looked like Real could take full control of the game, Kimmich and James took advantage of some poor defensive positioning by Casemiro, Kroos and especially Marcelo, who was nowhere to be seen in this goal.

After the goal, Bayern unleashed an offensive avalanche. The attacks came from everywhere. Outstanding through balls broke Real pressing lines and found James, Thiago and Lewandowski with plenty of space in between the lines to wreak havoc against Real’s back four. Ribery, who had been mostly silenced during the initial half hour, led the charge on the wings, and Bayern finally started to show their superiority in the box thanks to Lewandowski’s aerial dominance, Müller intelligence at finding shooting positions and a nervous Navas who was glued to his goal.

In this complicated context, Marcelo scored at the most opportune moment, taking advantage of a ball that, in hindsight, should have been cleared by Javi Martínez but that wasn’t too big of a scoring threat to begin with.

During the 2nd half, the introduction of Asensio gave Real more counterattacking power and fluidity.

As explained by Sushruta Nandy’s answer, the game-changing substitution of Asensio came by a rather accidental cause: an Isco shoulder injury. Asensio played in the same LM/LW position as Isco, but he was a much better fit for the role, with his increased aggression and speed constantly threatening Bayern’s defense—especially on the counter—and making him a better asset for pressing tasks. Furthermore, his skill on the ball allowed Real to string possessions that overcame Bayern’s pressing lines.

The relentless pressing efforts of Asensio and Lucas would be rewarded with the decisive goal of the night, as they forced and took advantage of a mistake by Rafinha.

Bayern continued their efforts to score under the same principles as before: the brilliant match of a persistent, incisive and wonderfully productive Ribery and the constant threat of the aerially dominant Lewandowski and the slippery Müller. In this context, Varane and Ramos provided another excellent European performance to compensate for Navas’ nervousness and prevent Bayern’s attacking threat from materializing into more chances and goals.

Real had taken on a full reactive attitude at this point, but their counterattacking game was not up to their usual standards. While Benzema’s entrance helped and gave Ronaldo a much-needed attacking partner, neither striker participated consistently well in the team’s attacking build up. Since Lucas was forced into the RB position due to Carvajal’s injury, Real also lost much needed incisiveness and aggression on the right.

All-in-all, I have to agree with those who comment that neither team had a game worthy of a UCL semifinal. Collectively, Bayern was very predictable and depended excessively on Ribery’s productivity, while the CKM and Ronaldo didn’t have a particularly inspired game that could compensate Real’s tactical issues. This seems like a good year for an outsider to upset the established European order and win the trophy.

Real Madrid comments

There are no perfect solutions: every plan or formation will carry a trade-off. In this case, the counterattacking 4–4–2, despite its lack of midfield control, struck me as a better fit for this match. Zidane used the 4–1–4–1 aiming for more midfield control at the expense of counterattacking, but Bayern’s goal broke Real’s controlling momentum.
Despite a couple of outstanding saves, Navas was a severe liability for Real Madrid. This match needed an aerially dominant GK who can prevent crosses from getting to the strikers, and Navas is not that kind of keeper. His lack of confidence in the box affected defenders too, who often preferred to clear balls that Navas should normally catch.
Not a good match from the CKM midfield. Kroos and Modric couldn’t find solutions against Bayern’s press and achieve midfield control. Thanks to Real’s lack of compactness, an understaffed Casemiro was forced to be everywhere in defense. The substitution of Kovacic was much needed to get some fresh legs.
Lucas and Asensio are not better than Bale, but they have something the Welshman lacks: initiative. Bale has a shy personality type and his willingness to be aggressive and improvise depends a lot on his instructions and the tactical system. In Zidane’s Real Madrid, where offensive systems depend very heavily on individual improvisation, Lucas and Asensio are much better at finding their place in the system than Bale.
That being said, in hindsight, Bale would have been a more appropriate substitution that Benzema. This match was a perfect fit for Benzema’s skill set, but the Frenchman can’t deliver consistently.
Complicated contexts for Isco and Ronaldo: both need significant positional freedom to be at their best, but the game plan confined Isco to the left and Ronaldo to the CF position. Neither could compensate this with individual inspiration.

Bayern comments

Bayern’s game plan is incredibly powerful but predictable. The team can brute force their way through any rival by attacking through the wings, but perhaps increased attacks through the middle can add variety and unpredictability, which will ultimately make the attacks on the wings even more effective.
That being said, Bayern achieved a lot if we considered that they were missing Alaba, Coman and Vidal, and were further hindered by the in-game injuries Robben and Boateng. 4–5 starters were missing!
Thiago and James are world-class at final passes, but not at controlling the tempo and building up attacks from the back. It showed.
What a match from Ribery, who proves that even at 35, he can deliver world-class performances in the toughest European stages and show his best qualities: persistence, incisiveness and productivity.
Ribery, Lewandowski and Müller were consistent attacking threats that often overcame Real’s defensive line, but none of them had a good day when it comes to finishing their chances. The complete opposite to Real’s attackers.
