Believing in Brown
Larry Brown is going to turn around the New York Knicks. At least, that’s what the people who have been beating him are saying.

With the Knicks off to a dismal start in his first season, Brown has taken to blaming himself for the team’s poor play. But others believe Brown is the solution, not the problem.

“Larry’s always liked challenges and he’ll stick with this,” said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, a close friend of Brown’s. “He will enjoy, whether they’re winning or losing, he will enjoy coaching them. He will continue to coach them every minute of every practice and every game, ’cause that’s what he does. He’ll be persistent as hell about it, and they’ll listen, they’ll get better.”

Orlando’s Grant Hill remembers how good the Knicks used to be when he was a younger player in Detroit. Though the Knicks are nowhere near as good anymore, Hill thinks Brown will have them going in the right direction before long.

“He has an unbelievable track record,” Hill said. “It’s been a tough few years I’m sure for New York and the fans, but they have the right people in place in terms of Isiah (Thomas) and Coach Brown and they’ll get it right. They’ll get better during the season and they’ll figure it out.”

Larry Brown had it all wrong after the San Antonio debacle when he backed Stephon Marbury, who heard boos for the first time since coming home to play for the Knicks. Afterward, Brown told the media: "He's trying." The issue is not about trying. That should be a given. In New York, it's all about performance and winning. That's what Knick fans expect from Marbury and all his teammates. At this point, maybe that's asking too much.

On Jan. 2, the Suns finish their first major East Coast swing in New York against the Knicks. The next day, when they're home in Phoenix, Amare Stoudemire is scheduled to start running and shooting. Stoudemire has been out since early October after having microfracture surgery on his left knee. "He's way ahead of the timetable at this point," said coach Mike D'Antoni. "The MRI's look really good, better than what they should look at this time. But that won't speed up anything in terms of when we think he'll be back." The Suns are still projecting a mid-February return for Stoudemire.

As players and coaches agree, there shouldn't be any drug testing on game days. But even after the fiasco in Seattle involving Reggie Evans, who had to take a league-mandated test at halftime of the New York game, the NBA's independent testing agency, CDT Inc. of Long Beach, Calif., is still asking players to give urine specimens when their focus should be entirely on the game at hand. It happened again last week. According to team sources, only an hour and 10 minutes before the Knicks played the Spurs in the Garden, Knicks reserve center Jackie Butler was pulled out of warmups to submit to a test. The NBA's only stipulation is "no testing during the game," said a league spokesman. "(There is) still testing before and after." They need to rethink that policy.

Knicks Top Cavs For Fourth Straight

Jamal Crawford collected 26 points and 10 rebounds and Stephon Marbury added 22 points as the Knicks improved to 4-0 in the new year with a 92-84 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rookie Channing Frye contributed 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench and Eddy Curry added 12 and eight for the Knicks, who snapped a five-game road losing streak.

New York trailed, 68-57, with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter but tied the game at 75-75 on Crawford's fadeaway jumper with 9:27 remaining.

After Cleveland opened an 81-77 edge on a 3-pointer by Mike Wilks with 7:46 to go, New York went on a 15-1 run before LeBronJames made a meaningless bank shot with 17 seconds left that capped the scoring.

James scored 36 points but had just four in the final period while being blanketed by Quentin Richardson. The third-year superstar also contributed seven rebounds and seven assists for the Cavaliers, who had won seven of the previous eight meetings in the series.

Drew Gooden had 14 points and 12 rebounds but was held scoreless and had just one board in the fourth quarter for Cleveland, which shot a woeful 20 percent (4-of-20) in the final period.

The Cavaliers slipped to 2-2 without second-leading scorer Larry Hughes, who underwent surgery Friday to repair a right long finger fracture and is expected to be sidelined eight weeks. In the meantime, Cleveland begins a six-game West Coast trip Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
